Globally, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) pose a significant threat to health. More than 75% of the deaths globally are due to NCD.

Sri Lanka has major achievements in controlling communicable diseases, including virtual elimination of vaccine-preventable disease, maternal and child health compared to the other South Asian countries, even comparable with some developed countries. However, NCDs are overtaking, and they are responsible for 83% of the total deaths in Sri Lanka.

The NCD unit is responsible for preventing and controlling chronic NCD, including prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, chronic respiratory disease, chronic renal diseases, and acute NCD, mainly prevention and control of injuries.
